The Fortress of Louisbourg is one of the largest historical
parks available for the public in the world.
Being a strategic outpost for the route from Europe to Canada and the St Lawrence
River, the Fortress of Louisbourg has been under siege more than once.
Hold by the french, the Fortress was under heavy attack in June 1758.
It was the 21st of June, when the 64 guns heavy "Le Celebre'" was
set afire by british shells. She burned down to the water line before she finally
rested in just 5m on muddy bottom. Today you can still see the cannons, cannon
balls and many more details that have survived the centuries. You need a guide
under the permit of Parks Canada in order to dive there, and because it is a
historical site, you are not allowed to touch the bottom.
