The wreck of the "Finchley" doesn't rest in Cape Breton Waters, but off Country Harbour on the Mainland. Only accessible after a short boat ride, you will plunge into the water and sink to this amazing wreck. Standing upright on sandy bottom, the "Finchley" rests in about 28m of water.
With about 85m in length, 12m wide and little over 7m deep the "Finchley" is still an breathtaking site.
She left Consaw, South Carolina in 1884 with a cargo of 2350t of phosphate rock, heading for the United Kingdom. On her voyage to Sydney, Nova Scotia to reload coal, she struck a rock in the early morning of September 29th, 1884. Being in no condition to be rescued, the Captain hired a local fisherman to tow the ship in deeper water, where she found her final resting place.
Today she is completely covered with anemones and is home to a large amount of various species.
